Maarten Schelles graduated as a Biomedical Engineer from KU Leuven in 2020. With a Baekeland mandate from the Flemish government, he combined his work as CTO and co-founder at ReVision Implant with a PhD in Electrical Engineering at KU Leuven, deepening his knowledge about brain implants and neural stimulation. He is strongly committed to further translate ReVision’s breakthrough technology into a real-life medical device, potentially helping tens of millions of blind people worldwide.

Everybody knows successful entrepreneurs like Bill Gates or Marc Coucke. But how did their jobs look like before they became famous? What does it really mean to found, or work for, a deeptech start-up? Are you part of a small group of visionaries trying to change the world? Or are you rather an imposter selling thin air to clients and investors? As a graduating student, working at a (deeptech) start-up might feel like a leap into the unknown. In this talk, we’ll dive into some of the stereotypes that still exist around deeptech start-ups, such as the experience you gain there and what this can mean for future jobs, or the job security and salaries at start-ups versus multinationals.
