Robin graduated as a Mathematical Engineer from KU Leuven in 2023. He is now pursuing a PhD at the Department of Electrical Engineering, where he draws inspiration from neuronal dynamics to bridge the gap between animals and robots. By modeling the spiking behavior of biological neurons, his work explores event-driven architectures that enable more adaptive and efficient computation and control in intelligent systems.
Nina holds a Master’s degree in Mathematical Engineering from KU Leuven and is currently pursuing a PhD at the Department of Electrical Engineering (PSI). She is part of the Lab of Imaging Genetics, where her research focuses on modeling 3D craniofacial growth trajectories for children undergoing craniofacial diagnostics and surgery.
To PhD or not to PhD?
16:30 – 16:50
Thinking about a PhD, but not sure what it’s really like? This talk gives you a clear and honest look behind the scenes of doing a PhD in engineering. What should you do before starting a PhD? How do you choose a topic? How do you find a supervisor? What skills should you build during your master’s? We will share practical tips to help you prepare and stand out. What does a normal day actually look like? (Hint: it’s not just sitting alone and writing.) We’ll talk about research, experiments, coding, teamwork, conferences, teaching, deadlines, and the freedom to explore your own ideas. And most importantly: how does it feel to do a PhD? We will share real experiences from our PhD. The challenges, the pressure, the small wins, the big achievements, and the personal growth that comes with it. If you’re curious about research, unsure about your next step, or simply want to know whether a PhD fits you, this session will give you the insight you need.
Come and find out if a PhD could be your next adventure.
